The Story of Beneath The Skin
In 2014, Memphis May Fire released a song.
Matty Mullins, vocalist of Memphis May Fire, wrote a song called “Beneath the Skin”. The lyrics tell the story of a girl who “dreams of a day when she won't have to cry herself to sleep”.
The song embodies the stories that fans would share every night about addiction, suicide, self-harm, fear, hopelessness, and more.
Brittany Mullins took action to help those fans.
Experiencing many of those fans’ stories firsthand, Brittany Mullins, Matty’s wife, felt moved to help. She started the Beneath The Skin Mentorship Program in 2015 to give these fans access to a mentor who would support them for a full year.
Hundreds of fans were helped.
Over the course of eight years, hundreds of fans were connected to a mentor. Out of these connections, lifelong friendships were formed, people attended one another’s weddings, and lives were forever impacted.
“My mom moved in and told me, ‘I’m disappointed that you’re not the way I thought you’d be.’ It killed me. I used to judge people that take their own life, but all I can say is you never know until it’s happened to you.
I was beyond happy to be matched with my mentor. A lot of things that I told her, nobody in the world knows. I know these things last a year, but we’ll be best friends for life. I’m so thankful she was there for me. I can rely on her. I know she’s got me.”
